Overview

We start with expansive views across the racecourse and Epsom Downs, before descending to the wood and open heath of Banstead Heath, then a gentle with a climb on to the ridge of The North Downs Way. The remainder of the walk is along the chalk paths and woodland of the NDW to Merstham. There will be some mud and a couple of stiles.

Train: London Bridge 09.40; East Croydon 09.58; arrive Tattenham Corner 10.38. Freedom pass holders need only buy a single ticket from Merstham to Coulsdon South for the return journey. Others buy 2 single tickets. You must travel in the rear 5 coaches of the train. It divides at Purley. Plenty of return trains.

Lunch: Brief picnic stop after 6 miles at Colley Hill Memorial shelter on NDW, then a second stop for tea and toilets at the NT kiosk a mile further along the route. There is no shelter at the kiosk.

Toilet:  On the train and NT kiosk after 7 miles.
