A mix of rural and urban walking in the historic Medway Valley, following paths along the river and on the valley sides. Clear, easy paths with some gentle climbs, although terrain can be marshy and muddy. Views of and from the river. Locks, weirs, medieval bridges, historic buildings, and a glimpse of a castle. Opt out possible from Maidstone stations at lunchtime. Pace will be moderate; there will be occasional stops at points of interest.
Train: Charing Cross 9:04; London Bridge 9:13. (Tonbridge train). Arr. Paddock Wood 9:53 for change to 10:03 Medway Valley Line train to Wateringbury, arr. 10:14. Probably best to buy off-peak return to Aylesford. Boundary station for passholders is Knockholt. Meet in Wateringbury station car park. Return from Aylesford station - change at Paddock Wood for London trains.
Lunch: Picnic at Maidstone in Brenchley Gardens or by river. Shops/cafes available for drinks in Fremlin Walk shopping centre.
Toilet: On train, at Teston Bridge Country Park about an hour into walk, and public toilets at Fremlin Walk shopping centre at lunchtime.
