Overview

We will meet at the car park of the William Pengelly Cave Studies Centre in Buckfastleigh at 1045 hrs. A volunteer guide will meet us and oversee helmets and lamps prior to a two hour tour (approximately) of the limestone cave system.

Payment is £8 for adults and £4 for children.

After the tour, those who wish to walk in the afternoon can join a five mile loop from Buckfast Abbey Car Park at 1330 hrs to the River Dart and Hembury Woods. The Abbey, its restaurant and its gardens will all be open after the walk or instead of the walk.  This short afternoon walk will be a moderate level but through woodland with paths that could be muddy and slippery.

This is intended as a none-too-strenuous day out after the preceding two days of walks on the Exeter Ramblers’ programme.

Please meet at the William Pengelly Cave Studies Centre car park at 1045. From the Exeter direction, exit the A38 and DO NOT take the turning to Buckfast Abbey but continue towards the Steam Railway and town. Look out for the sharp Russets Lane turning on the right well before the turning on the left for the Steam Railway car park. The afternoon walk will begin from Buckfast Abbey Car Park at 1330 hrs.
