Overview

In 2019 Great Torrington was rated as one of the healthiest places to live but during the English Civil war it was of more strategic significance.  It was here that the Parliamentarians, led by Thomas Fairfax, defeated the Royalists. Our walk takes in many other historical features of the local area.

We leave the car park and head down the winding path to the river Torridge.  The footpath follows the river through woods and fields, past the alleged birthplace of Tarka the Otter.  We return via the old canal, gradually climbing to the edge of the golf course and the common.  The path takes us through woods back into the town and our starting point.  Hilly in places.
