Descending on a narrow footpath through woodland, we'll visit the tiny St.Mary's church with its painted wagon roof and newly-constructed labyrinth. After (very) briefly retracing our steps, we'll walk along a wide track following the valley of Bogmire Gill before crossing over Collis Ridge to emerge onto the open moorland. A mixture of tracks and footpaths along the edge of the moors takes us back to the foot of Rievaulx Bank. After a gradual climb back up through the woods, we finish the walk on an easy track back to the car park enjoying far-reaching views in all directions if we're lucky with the weather.
50% of the route is on good tracks. There are likely to be sections of wet mud elsewhere but not so deep as to overtop hiking boots. Some fallen trees from the storms of winter 24/25 still have to be negotiated but they are not major obstacles.
The track along the valley of Bogmire Gill is being walked by kind permission of the Duncombe Estate.
Coffee / tea and home-made fruit scones have been arranged at Helmsley Bowling Club on Baxton's Lane after the walk at a suggested donation of £6 per person in aid of Bowling Club funds. All cars will pass the Bowling Club car park on their route home as Baxton's Lane is a no-through road. This parking is shared with the Swimming Pool and Sports pitches.
