To the village of Great Enton and an eighteenth century mill on a lake (take a close look at the mortar), on to Hambledon. Wood smoke hangs in the air. We ascend the Greensand Way (neither green nor sandy) - great views to the south - elevated Hurtwood carpeted with golden Beech leaf fall. Hascombe beckons as the tablecloth for our packed lunch (benches in the churchyard and overlooking the village pond, but no time for a meal in the White Horse). We rise to Winkworth Arboretum for our dessert: a course of rich autumn colours. Afternoon light fading, the River Wey and Godalming Navigation guide us to the heart of Godalming (home to the people of Saxon king Godhelm). To return to the metropolis or perhaps tarry a while for a libation?
Note this is a relatively strenuous walk, with a cumulative ascent of 320 m.
We're coming to the end of the autumn leaf colour period - what we see will be entirely dependent on the weather this week.
Cool, wet weather is forecast at the time of walk posting. You will need walking boots and, for those that use them, walking poles might assist. Waterproof outerwear and and multiple layers will help you stay warm.
The finishing time is an estimate only and dependent on a number of factors such as weather, group size, and speed of the group.
