Overview

We continue our journey along The Essex Way, 96 miles of glorious Essex from Epping Forest to Harwich beginning today at White Notley and heading via Coggeshall to Chappel & Wakes Colne. Along the way we make short diversions to view Nunns Bridge, a site of social activism in 1892, Grange Barn, another of the mighty grain barns of Essex and the chapel of St Nicholas where the halfway stone marker of The Essex Way can be found. I cannot promise mud at this time of the year but the views and charming towns and villages of Essex will more than make up for this.

Following a short tour of Coggeshall with its many listed buildings we will stop at the church of St Peter and Vincula for lunch, with The Woolpack Inn adjacent (for drinks only and bathroom facilities). Please bring a packed lunch as there will not be time to forage for and purchase lunch today.

Leaving Coggeshall we journey across fields, through woods and along green lanes visiting Great Tey before views of the Colne Valley open before us. We divert from the Essex Way at Pope's Hall to access the train at Chappel & Wakes Colne, walking alongside the impressive Chappel viaduct. Chappel & Wakes Colne are charming villages with not only a pub for refreshments but impressive architecture and a railway museum for the train enthusiasts amongst us.

Please bring a packed lunch and sufficient water for a day of walking and exploring Essex.

The finish time is an estimate and will be dependent upon several factors including the speed the group walks at, number of breaks taken, and the conditions on the day. I am hopeful that walkers will be able to make the 17.39 train, however I intend to linger in Chappel & Wakes Colne enjoying Essex hospitality at The Swan Inn and all are welcome to join me.

Dogs are welcome with well-behaved owners who undertake to have their companion on a lead as directed by farmers signs and at the request of the walk leader. There will be ample off lead opportunities and river time during the day.
